SITUATION

What we collect

  • Your email address, when you sign up (by magic link or with a password), sign in, or buy.
  • A password, only if you sign up with one, kept as a one-way hash we cannot read back.
  • Sign-in cookies. A signed cookie keeps your browser signed in or live, and a second one remembers how you signed in last, so the sign-in page can mark it. When you start a checkout, a third signed cookie holds its id, so the browser that paid can sign in when it comes back from Polar. No advertising cookies.
  • The Polar order id when you buy, so the purchase stays tied to your email. Your card goes to Polar, never to us.
  • Password accounts only: the IP address and browser of each signed-in session, until you sign out.

The desk also saves a few choices (the order of the columns, the wire you last opened) in your own browser's storage. They stay on your device and are not sent to us.

Why

  • The 7 days live: your first sign-in turns your browser live for 7 days, once per email.
  • Sign up and sign in: the magic link or the confirm link goes to your email, and the cookie keeps you signed in.
  • Situation Daily: the daily email of each situation's top lines, sent to confirmed emails.
  • The purchase: the order id ties your $49 purchase to your email.

We do not sell your email or share it for marketing.

Who receives it

  • Resend sends every email (the magic link, the confirm link, Situation Daily), so it sees your address.
  • Polar takes the payment as merchant of record. Checkout runs on Polar's site under Polar's own terms and privacy policy.
  • DataFast counts visits: which pages are read and where visits come from. Its script sets its own cookie to recognize a returning visitor.

Some parts of a page load straight from another service, so that service sees your IP address and browser, the same as any site you visit. None of them gets your email address.

  • YouTube plays the live video, through its privacy-enhanced embed (youtube-nocookie.com).
  • OpenFreeMap serves the map tiles and map fonts.
  • Amazon Web Services hosts the public Terrain Tiles elevation data behind the 3D map.
  • X serves the photos and video on X posts in the wire.
  • VesselFinder serves the ship-tracking map.
  • ADS-B Exchange serves the air traffic map.
  • GPSJam serves the GPS jamming map.

Your email address and account stay on our own server.

How long we keep it

  • Your email address: for as long as Situation runs, unsubscribed or not, so the 7 days live stay once per email. Ask and we delete it.
  • The Polar order id: for as long as Situation runs, because the purchase is for life.
  • Sign-in cookies: until you sign out or clear them in your browser. The cookie that remembers how you signed in last stays after you sign out, until you clear it. The checkout cookie lasts an hour, or until you come back from paying and sign in.

Unsubscribe

Every Situation Daily email and the confirmation email carry a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click stops the email. No sign-in needed.

Deletion

To have your email address and everything tied to it deleted, write to hello@dividendsolo.com from that address. Deleting it ends any access tied to it, a purchase included.
